We’re commencing to see neural networks in a very big selection of systems nowadays, however, all of them come back from pretty humble beginnings — particularly, the perceptron.
Well, the title could be a little bit of an appellation — I am awfully reaching to discuss the roots of neural networks. Today, most of the items we tend to characterize as “artificial intelligence” are primarily based around neural networks, so I’m going to let this one slide.

Even though we’re commencing to see the inclusion of neural networks and similar technologies in a very big selection of systems nowadays — starting from cars to money computer code — they all come from pretty modest beginnings. Much of what you see nowadays are literally deep neural networks, made possible by advances circa 2010 with regards to training these kinds of systems.
Prior to then, training deep networks was very time-consuming and tended to create brittle networks with low generality — by which I mean that those networks were fantastic for identifying the items they trained on, but not so great at identifying similar things out of the lab.
All of those networks have their roots in a very easy neural model: the perceptron. Frank Rosenblatt 1st designed the perceptron in hardware at university in 1957. It was a bit oversold at the time. Rosenblatt and also the Navy (who funded the work) claimed that it might modify future general intelligence.
Now, we do not have it however today, perceptron-inspired systems are driving cars, recognizing people in pictures, and translating languages. So I suppose they’ll not are that distant.
The perceptron is pretty simple, as you’d expect:
So this is a model of a single perceptron neuron in a neural network. Most networks will have more than a single neuron, of course.
But that may obscure the most important downside with this somatic cell model: It can solely classify linearly dissociable categories.
So what does this mean?
Well, take a glance at the mathematics within the definition of a perceptron. It only uses multiplication and addition. Both all of these are linear functions.

Think conversely how you outlined a linear operate after you 1st started pure mathematics and calculus. It was something like:
Compare that to the perceptron definition. Pretty similar.
So why is this a problem?
Well, all of the operations we tend to perform in a very ancient perceptron maintain one-dimensionality.
No matter what percentage layers you utilize, you’re still using a linear transformation over the input.
This means that you simply cannot classify things that are nonlinearly separated. Ever.
It does not matter however deep your network is, however complicated it’s, or what percentage neurons you’ve got. If it’s not linearly separable, you won’t be able to do much about it.
Needless to say, this limits the perceptron to solving fairly simple problems. If the problem is appropriately linear, though, the perceptron works like a victor. Otherwise? Well, you need to look at other options — ones that introduce nonlinear transformations; of which, today, there are plenty
